What is Jira?

Jira is Atlassian's project and issue tracking tool. It's built around agile methodologies — Scrum and Kanban — and has become the de facto standard for sprint planning and bug tracking in larger engineering teams. Whether you enjoy using it is another matter, but it's hard to work in software long without encountering it.

Issues and workflows

Everything in Jira is an issue — bugs, features, tasks, subtasks, epics. Each issue type has configurable fields and can move through a workflow with defined states and transitions. Workflows can be customised to match your team's process, which is powerful but can also make Jira setups complex and hard to untangle once they've grown organically over time.

Scrum and Kanban boards

Scrum projects give you a backlog and sprint-based planning. You pull issues into a sprint, work through them, and track velocity over time. Kanban projects use a continuous flow model with configurable WIP limits. Both board types visualise the current state of work in a way that's useful for team standups and sprint reviews, even if the underlying configuration can be fiddly.

Integrations

Jira integrates with most tools in the development ecosystem. GitHub and GitLab can link branches, commits, and pull requests to Jira issues automatically. Slack, Confluence, Bitbucket, and the rest of the Atlassian suite integrate directly. The marketplace has thousands of third-party plugins for anything not covered natively.

Pricing

Jira has a free tier for up to ten users, which is enough for small teams. Standard and Premium plans scale with team size and add features like advanced roadmaps, automation rules, and audit logs. It can get expensive at scale.
